Research Statement
My research focuses on students’ preconceptions about digital systems and on connecting these findings with school practice. I am particularly interested in how learners understand abstract computing concepts, such as the internet, computer systems, hardware components, and operating systems, and how these ideas can inform the design of meaningful teaching materials.
In my work, I combine empirical research on students’ thinking with the development and evaluation of instructional materials for lower secondary education. My aim is to support teaching that builds on students’ existing ideas, addresses common misconceptions, and helps teachers make complex digital technology topics accessible in the classroom.
Current Projects
AI assistants for teaching computer science on lower secondary school level
Principal Investigator, 2025-2027, Technology Agency of the Czech Republic
The project is conducted in collaboration with the non-profit organization AI dětem and focuses on developing an AI assistant/chatbot for the Tiny application to support computer science education at lower secondary schools. It aims to help teachers personalize instruction, provide students with individualized feedback, and develop a methodology for meaningful and safe integration of LLM-based tools into school practice.
Past Projects
Development of instructional materials for lower-secondary education in digital technologies
Principal Investigator, 2022-2024, Charles University Grant Agency
This project explored how lower-secondary students understand digital technologies and used their preconceptions as a basis for designing and evaluating new teaching materials for Czech schools.
Pregraduate preparation of future primary school teachers for teaching digital technologies in the light of current curriculum changes
Researcher, 2022-2024, Charles University Grant Agency
This project focused on how pre-service primary teachers understand internet principles and how their knowledge develops during a course specifically designed to support their understanding of this topic.
Internet4Kids - Building Internet knowledge: a theory of conceptual change perspective
Researcher, 2022-2024, Czech Science Foundation
This project investigated how children of different ages understand the internet, what they can learn about its structure and function, and which difficulties arise when teaching this abstract topic.
